Personal Belongings
Insuring personal belongings
The University of Chicago does not insure the personal belongings of its residents, and will not compensate for losses due to theft, fire, water damage, etc. Students are urged to review the coverage of their families’ existing homeowners’ policy to see what coverage is, or may be, available to them while in the Residence Halls. CSI Insurance Agency is a private company not affiliated with the University which provides personal property protection. Storing personal belongings
A reasonable amount of personal property may be kept in the storage areas of each House or Residence Hall. The University will not assume liability for personal property placed in the storage areas and discourages the storage of electronics or other valuables. Please note that the University reserves the right to limit the amount of stored items. All items must be boxed and labeled. Large pieces of furniture cannot be accommodated.

What should I bring?
All students should bring the following:
- Bed linens* (extra long, 36"x80")**
- Blankets
- Pillows
- Toiletries
- Towels
Students in the following Halls must bring their own kitchen supplies (i.e. cookware, dishes and utensils): Blackstone, Shoreland and Stony Island.
Students with private bathrooms must supply their own bathroom tissue.
*Residence Hall Linens is a company that works with the University Bookstore to offer linens to students. For more information, call 1-800-847-0751 or visit www.rhl.org.
** Pierce Tower beds are the standard twin size; they are not 80 inches long.
What will the University provide?
All rooms in the Residence Halls are furnished with the following: bed, dresser, desk, desk chair, telephone (shared with roommate(s)), book shelving, lighting and window treatments. Bedding is not provided.
Rooms in the following Halls are carpeted: Blackstone, Broadview, Hitchcock, Maclean, Max Palevsky, Shoreland, Snell-Hitchcock and Stony Island.
All Halls are equipped with the following items: coin-operated washers and dryers, brooms, dustpans, mops, vacuum cleaners, ironing boards and irons.
Is there anything I'm not allowed to bring?
For safety and sanitary reasons, the following items are not allowed in University Housing:
- Electric coffee makers
- Electric grills (ie; George Foreman grill)
- Halogen floor lamps
- Hot plates
- Microwaves
- Toasters and toaster ovens
- Refrigerators over 4.0 cubic feet
- Portable heating systems
- Weapons (including paintball guns, decorative weapons/swords and athletic weapons such as a bow and arrow)
- Air conditioners & beds (unless advance permission is granted for medical reasons).
- Amplified musical instruments may not be played in student rooms.
Where can I rent a refrigerator?
Husky Refrigerator Rentals, a private company not affiliated with the University of Chicago, will be at each Residence Hall on Opening Day and throughout Orientation Week. They will provide information regarding the various sizes and rental charges.
How can I access the Internet from my room?
Each room is connected to the campus network via an Ethernet connection. Please make sure that all computers are set up for Ethernet connection before arrival. Detailed information about the necessary hardware and connectivity software will be sent to all students from the Networking Services and Information Technologies (NSIT) department. Connectivity software packages are provided to all students at no additional cost. For more information, please visit http://ofest/connectivity/index.shtml.
